About this course:

What is a bitcoin node? What does it do? How do transactions flow through the network and get mined? The Bitcoin at Work(shop) is a 2-hour in-person team building game where participants are lead by a facilitator through the work of the bitcoin network. In the Work(shop), participants see how transactions actually get made, how they get to miners, what work a bitcoin node does and how miners help secure the network. Base58 offers 2-day long, in-person training courses for instructors and community leaders who are interested in running their own Work(shop)s. Let us know about who you are and what you’re looking for and we’ll add you to our waitlist to find out about the next facilitator training that we’re holding. Every facilitator receives a fully made and ready to go Base58 Bitcoin at Work(shop) Kit. It has all the transaction cards, (B)ASICS, and supplies you need to run a Work(shop) with up to 36 people.

What to know before class (pre-requisites):

Ideally you’ve played the Work(shop) already, but if you haven’t not to worry. We cover everything you need to know during class.

Topics we'll cover:

What is in a Bitcoin Node

Learn about what comes built in to the software that we know as “bitcoin-core”.

Transactions

What is a transaction? How do we create new ones? We’ll learn how to send and receive transactions as well as verify that they’re valid.

Networking

Every node on the network needs to find out about new transactions. We’ll learn about the networking protocol that nodes use to send and receive data from other nodes.

Block Building

Once a node has enough transactions, it’s ready to start building a block. We’ll learn about how transactions get chosen for a block and how to write our very own blockheaders.

Mining

Once you’ve built a block, it’s time to start trying to complete the block header by finding a winning hash. In this section of the Work(shop) we’ll be introduced to the (B)ASICS and start putting in work.

Leading the Course

Facilitators will take turns walking through running each of the sections, to a small group of other facilitators.

Materials Prep

Each facilitator will take time to save what they’ve learned by making their own slideshows or learning materials, which they’ll use on Day 2 to run through each of the sessions.

"As a junior developer it's a daunting task jumping into Bitcoin development for the first time, I've tried on my own and failed multiple times in the past. Base58 gave me a new opportunity to dive in again guided by a real expert in the industry along side a class of likeminded students. This has been invaluable for my understanding of the Bitcoin protocol and has given me examples and actionable next steps for developing my skills and starting to build on Bitcoin for real. Thank you Base58!"

"Phenomenal course. Came into it with limited technical knowledge of bitcoin. They make it super accessible (no dev experience needed, interactive and fun) and I'm now sooo much more comfortable with the technical side of the bitcoin fundamentals. In fact, some of the things I learnt helped me while interviewing at bitcoin companies! If you're interested in bitcoin and want to learn about how it works - highly recommend taking this course!"

"I thought I knew how transactions worked in bitcoin up until I took the class. It is a deep, byte by byte dive into the different types of transactions, understandable for non-coding people. Just have an open mindset, let yourself be taught the most basic bitcoin-cli and python commands, and you are good to go. I was afraid it would be too technical, and don't get me wrong, it does get into the roots of how the transaction protocols work, but nifty managed to keep it simple and clear enough for someone with a basic bitcoin knowledge to follow."
